THE BAPTISMAL PROMISES
If the person being baptised is a child/infant, the following questions are asked of their parent/s and godparents:
Priest: Will you accept the responsibilities placed upon you in bringing [NAME] for baptism?
Parents & godparents: I will.
Priest: Are you willing to answer on behalf of [NAME]?
Parents & godparents: I am.
Priest: By your own prayers and example, by your friendship and love, will you encourage name/this child in the life and faith of the Christian community,?
Parents & godparents: I will, with God’s help.
Then, the following questions are asked of the person being baptised (or their godparents):
Priest: Before God and this congregation, you must affirm that you turn to Christ and reject all that is evil. Do you turn to Christ?
Candidate/parents & godparents: I turn to Christ.
Priest: Do you repent of your sins?
Candidate/parents & godparents: I repent of my sins.
Priest: Do you reject selfish living, and all that is false and unjust?
Candidate/parents & godparents: I reject them all.
Priest: Do you renounce Satan and all evil?
Candidate/parents & godparents: I renounce all that is evil.
Then after a short prayer, the priest says:
Priest: Will you each, by God’s grace, strive to live as a disciple of Christ, loving God with your whole heart, and your neighbour as yourself, until your life’s end?
Candidate/parents & godparents: I will, with God’s help.
Then after a series of prayers, the priest asks the candidate/godparents to affirm the faith of the Church through the Apostles' Creed:
Priest: Do you believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth?
Candidate/parents & godparents: I do.
Priest: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified, died, and was buried, rose from the dead, and is now seated at the right hand of the Father?
Candidate/parents & godparents: I do.
Priest: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting?
Candidate/parents & godparents: I do.
And baptism with water will shortly follow.
